Research Program
Research at Jacobi-Montefiore
Our department has a 30+ year history of investigating critical topics in emergency medicine. Researchers in our department have explored topics as diverse as the role of opiates and parenteral adjuncts in pain management, asthma management in the ED , HIV screening, COVID-19 best practices, improvements in resident and community education, and many other topics. Our research portfolio is as broad and wide as the discipline of emergency medicine itself.
In recent years we have expanded our mission to developing innovative solutions for the many challenges facing emergency medicine today. By pursuing interdepartmental collaboration and collaborating with startups across the world, we are staying at the cutting-edge of ED-based bio-design and innovation. Our current projects in this area include mHealth applications to improve care transitions for patients with chronic disease, as well as remote monitoring and wearable health technology.
The Research Fellowship
The Department of Emergency Medicine of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center offers an EM Fellowship in Clinical Research. This two-year research fellowship combines a didactic curriculum leading to a Master of Science degree in clinical research methods with a mentored experience in clinical research.
The department of emergency medicine provides support for research faculty and projects, as well as in-house 24-hour research associates, statistical support and dedicated mentorship. Through the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, researchers also have access to the Einstein-Montefiore Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR). The ICTR’s core services include the: 1) Clinical Trials and Regulatory Support Office; 2) Clinical Investigation Services Cores; 3) Biostatistics, Epidemiology & Research Design; 4) Biomarker and Analytic Research Core; 5) Biorepository; 6) Community Engagement Consultation Core; 7) Research Informatics Core; and 8) Project Acceleration Resource.
-
Integrates emergency medicine clinical training with mentorship and practical experience in the development, implementation, and publication of scholarly research.
-
The track offers robust research opportunities with access to 24hr/day research assistants as well as biostatistics and informatics support from the Department of Emergency Medicine and Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
-
The goal of this program is to train physician-scientists who will become leading scholars in academic emergency medicine. Participants who successfully complete the research track will be offered the position of Research Fellow in the Montefiore Department of Emergency Medicine.
-
This track will be co-led by Dr. Benjamin Friedman, Professor of Emergency Medicine and Vice Chair of the Montefiore ED’s Research Division, as well as Dr. Carlo Lutz, Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine and Director of Clinical and Research Innovation.
-
-
A sub-track of the Residency Research Track. Health technologies such as therapeutics, medical devices, and digital tools have great potential to transform the delivery of healthcare and encourage personalized medicine.
-
The Pathway’s goals are to encourage the development, validation, and implementation of such technologies through a real-world ‘biodesign’ (i.e. identification, invention, implementation, and launch processes) innovation experience, supplements by an educational curriculum (including cases, exercises, and readings) in health technology innovation biodesign.
-
Initially developed for the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Montefiore Moses/Weiler, HTITP is now being offered to residents in the department of emergency medicine as part of the Research Track.
-
This track will be led by Dr. Carlo Lutz, Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine and Director of Clinical and Research Innovation.
